Introductory Exhibition

Artist: Otomo Yoshihide + Aoyama Yasutomo + Ito Takayuki Venue: Foyer, 2nd Floor Gallery
An ensemble performed by portable record players. Embodying “improvisation” and “collaboration”—the roots of Otomo’s exhibited work—this piece has been presented and revised across various locations since 2005. Its main components are record players that have finished their working lives, each modified by citizens’ hands. Through a bespoke system, they create an improvisational performance where no two moments are ever the same.

Artist: Otomo Yoshihide + Sakamoto Ryuichi In corabollation with YCAM Venue: Studio B
Studio B is an open space where natural light filters in through the courtyard, with sightlines extending through to other spaces within YCAM — a room loosely connected to its surrounding environment. Here, a piano and guitar are installed to perform an automated improvised duet. The piano’s sound is reconstructed from the keystroke data (MIDI) Sakamoto left behind, with Otomo providing guidance based on his memories of performing improvisation with Sakamoto in the 2010s. For this work, YCAM InterLab also developed a device that extracts the characteristics of Otomo’s guitar improvisation and performs it automatically. Neither artist is present — yet the installation continues generating performance forever, in search of a sound that, even fully automated, remains truly “improvisational.”

First presented at the 2008 exhibition “Otomo Yoshihide / ENSEMBLES”, Filaments originally took a library after closing hours as its stage, creating an acoustic experience of listening to sound from a corridor overlooking an atrium below. This time, the work moves to the lawn plaza adjoining YCAM (Yamaguchi City Central Park) and the Patio that loosely connects it to the building’s interior. Placed in this space — open to the sounds of daily life and the ambient environment alike — are sine-wave electronic tones alongside the sounds of metals, played by physical mechanisms. The rustling of trees stirred by the wind, the voices of people gathered in the park, the distant clamor of traffic — as these mix with the work’s own sound, they create an experience unique to each and every visitor, one that can only exist in that place, at that moment.

Artist: Otomo Yoshihide + Mochida Atsuko + Ito Takayuki + YCAM Venue: Studio A
In Studio A — a blackbox theater — a massive structure stands, built from the pillars and beams of a demolished Japanese wooden house, poised to move. The structure is the work of Mochida, who has spent her career dynamically transforming the relationship between houses and the people who inhabit them, through the creative demolition of vacant homes. The complex movement and raw, visceral sound it generates mix with noise released from the countless speakers and household appliances arranged by Otomo — an ever-shifting fusion of space and sound that surges over the audience as one. Members of the public are also expected to take part in this powerful, forceful act of creation.
Otomo and Mochida — different in generation, genre, and career — have spent over a year in dialogue and trial and error for this project. The work that rises out of the process of creating alongside an unpredictable collaborator is filled with unprecedented surprise and humor, transformed into a positive message about what improvisation can be.
